_*The forecast is for severe cold. Be careful of frozen water pipes!*_*

Water pipes often freeze when the outside temperature drops to -4 
degrees Celsius or lower (-1 to -2 degrees Celsius in areas exposed to 
strong winds). 　　　　　　

Please pay close attention to weather information and take precautions 
to prevent water pipes from freezing.

【How to prevent water pipes from freezing】
・Wrap water pipes that are exposed outdoors, such as water pipes 
connected to water heaters or washing machine, with old cloth or 
insulation material, and cover them with vinyl tape to prevent water 
from seeping in.
・Water is less likely to freeze if it is flowing. It is the same as the 
water in a pond freezing but the water in a river not freezing at the 
same temperature. If the weather forecast indicates that the next day's 
minimum temperature will be very low, run a pencil lead-sized amount of 
water from one faucet in your home all night before going to bed the 
night before.
・Please be careful not to use too much water as you will be charged a 
water fee for the water that continues to flow. (If you store water in a 
bathroom or bucket, you can effectively use the water you flush.)
・However, please be aware that if you leave hot water (not cold water) 
running for hours on end, the gas safety device may trip.

【When the water pipes freeze】
・Do not pour boiling water directly onto water pipes, as sudden 
temperature changes may damage the pipes.
・Either wait for it to melt naturally, or cover the frozen area with a 
towel and pour lukewarm water over it to slowly dissolve it.
・Please be careful not to leave the faucet open while the water pipes 
are frozen. (When it eventually thaws, the water will continue to flow.)
